The gender representation doesn't stop at children's films, it only gets worse with movies designed for an older audience. The stats are actually quite shocking when you look at different categories of how males and females are represented on screen.
This picture really says it all. Underrepresentation of females in Hollywood is just as prevalent and problematic as the stereotypical misrepresentative behavior of the female characters in film.
Society has adjusted to thinking of some of these stereotypical representations as the norm from being exposed to them for so long in media and the topic doesn't seem to bother too many people unless someone points out the obvious faults. So consider this poster. There are an array of problems that stand out. To start off, notice that there are five male superheroes and only a single female heroine. The film industry has always been dominated by male protagonists, and even if there is a female that is competent enough to help along the plot, in the end the male hero comes to save the day.
What if all the male characters posed like the female ones? See anything wrong now? The sole female superhero seems to love standing in such a way that seems to display her most alluring "assists." This poster is incredibly good at illustrating how ridiculous the view of how a woman's stance should be is. Why should Black Widow's butt or chest be on display in every picture when all the other characters seem to be concentrating on displaying their respective sets of powers?
