According to NYFA, 77% of Oscar voters are male, so it's not surprising when they also reported that there is a huge discrepancy in the number of women Oscar winners in the various fields than males. How can the end result be corrected for bias if the voting body is itself not equally represented? And perhaps one of the problems with the huge gap in these numbers for males and females is that there are not as many females pursuing the same positions as their male counterparts, however, the fact that it seems that getting said position is much harder for a woman influences the the gender gap in the industry. The root of the problem is not an easy one to find nor is it clearcut, but what is clear is that to make any progress, we have to start by changing the representation of women in media from stereotypical behaviors to showcase more active and less sexualized roles.
